Background

The KwaZulu-Natal Indigenous Knowledge Systems Documentation Centre (IKSDC) was established in 2012 and it hosted by the University of KwaZulu Natal. IKSDC’s are provincial hubs geared to implementing the National Recordal System (NRS) initiative. The NRS is an initiative of the Department of Science and Technology, which draws from the 2004 Indigenous Knowledge Systems (IKS) Policy. The Policy aims to promote, preserve and protect the rights of indigenous knowledge holders.

To be a champion hub of Indigenous Knowledge activities in KwaZulu-Natal.

Mission

To preserve, protect and promote indigenous knowledge of communities whilst creating an interactive platform for younger generations to engage on IK issues.

Activities of the KZN IKSDC

1.   Make IKS information accessible

• Identify knowledge holders in the communities
• Record / document Indigenous knowledge systems

2.   Encourage the use of IKS information

• produce IKS information packs and resource lists
• Offer an information and enquiry service.

3.   Production of IKS information

• Work with traditional healers and community groups to document their experience in Traditional medicine and food security;
• Translate and produce IKS informational materials
